Studying the black sand flow…

Rocks, Stones, Gravel, Sand…

I have found myself thinking about rocks and stones constantly for several weeks now… I can’t walk around without picking up a few and bringing them back home. I spend long moments bent to the ground staring at small collections of gravel that have washed down the driveway. I pick up handfuls of sand and let them fall through my fingers to watch the grains sift and fall.

Every color in the world seems to be locked in the small rocks and sand grains, but when I look at the big picture of the hi-desert floor here I just see the golden sands eroded from the surrounding boulders.

Often I feel as if there is millions of years of stories about this place stored in the rocks and stones, and if I listen closely, or long enough, I’ll learn those stories.

Someday I’ll look back and remember this time when my love of geology blossomed… Right now I’m letting the desert teach me about itself.
